By VBL I Myanmar junta troops raided a Chin village, Sekan, in Kalaymyo Township, Sagaing region, in the early morning of October 7, killing a grandmother and her teenage grandson who were preparing to flee, according to residents who managed to escape before the junta troops arrived.
“We reached for their phone, and a Myanmar junta soldier picked up and said they were dead,” said a villager.
A resistance group, CNO-Upper Chindwin Region (CNO-UCR), identified the two victims as Pi Ngaih Hnem, 67, and her grandson Salai Van Bawi Lian, 14. CNO-UCR stated that the junta soldiers burned the victims’ bodies along with their motorbike.
The junta troops also set numerous houses on fire during the raid, residents said. “We can see smoke rising from our village,” said a villager. Some estimated that around 100 houses were burned down, but it is not yet confirmed.
According to CNO-UCR, a disabled man was left in the village during the raid, and his whereabouts and safty are still unknown.
Sekan villagers suffered a similar raid by Myanmar junta troops on January 5, 2022. Junta troops burned down 88 houses during the raid.
